Abstract

In order to study and identification local populations of onion (Allium cepa L.) in Golestan province, this research was carried out at the GorganAgricultural Research Stations in 2011-2013 growing season. Twenty-seven local populations, Zargan cultivar and 4 hybrids were sown based on a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Some important characteristics such as number of leaf, leaf length, bulb diameter, bulb neck diameter, long term storage and bulb yield were recorded. Some of traits such as bulb neck diameter, the number of root bulb are important in bulb storage. Variation of these traits according to vast diversity of Iranian onion population is important and helpful for Planting and storage. Analysis of variance showed significant differences among genotypes for all of the morphological and agronomic traits. Based on cluster analysis, the genotypes were classified in four groups with different agronomic traits. The Zargan cultivar and Khanbebinlocal population showed superiority and more adaptability over all other genotypes under Gorgan conditions. But these genotypes have low durability for storage. Five local populations(Varsan, Ashkhaneh, Nomal, Takhshimahale, and SaadAbad) were selected for breeding program.
